A new training center and office complex for the Indiana Pacers in downtown Indy??? Some of our listeners want to know why, when the team’s home, Bankers Life Fieldhouse, is a modern-era NBA arena. Bill Benner with Pacers Sports and Entertainment told media this week that the new facility would help the team stay competitive with the rest of the NBA. Benner also said the new facilities could potentially bring marquee free agents to the city helping them offer the player practice perks that help to build championship teams. Indy’s Capital Improvement Board unanimously approved a plan for the team to build a new five-story facility downtown on the parking lot on the east side of Delaware Street just south of Virginia Avenue. The Pacers are teaming up with St. Vincent Hospital and would pay the $50 million price tag for the building of the new facility on land owned by the city and pay the associated maintenance, upkeep and operational costs as well while leasing it back from the CIB for 50 years at a buck a year. At the end of 50 years, the team would then give the building to the city at the end of the lease. The Pacers say the new “St. Vincent Center: Indiana Pacers Training Facility” will be the 20th stand-alone training facility built by an NBA team since 1999. Get a peek at what the new St. Vincent Center would look like in the tweet below:
