It’s Labor Day Monday–a federal holiday, which means federal, state, county and city offices–including the post office, banks and most schools are closed today.
Good morning….
Indianapolis metro police are investigating two violent incidents on opposite sides of town on this Labor Day. Police answered a call around 2 a.m. this morning when a fight led to gunplay at a northwest side night club. One person was shot as the fisticuffs spilled outside onto the parking lot of Q-BO Nite Club at West 71st Street and North Michigan Road. That victim is in critical condition. Later, around 6:15 a.m., police were sent to the intersection of East 25th Street and North Sherman Drive on Indy’s northeast side. It’s there that they found a man suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was later identified as the owner of Mr. James Hand Carwash, according to Fox59. He was taken to Eskenazi Hospital for treatment and is in critical condition. A person of interest is now in police custody as they investigate what led up to this incident.
In other news…
A man is dead and his brother has been arrested for his murder. The incident happened on the 2500 block of North Gale Street. Initially, the call was for a man who was bleeding from his leg. Police learned this was also a stabbing incident. The victim ended up dying from his injuries, and homicide investigators determined the incident happened after a fight between the victim and his brother. Police have not determined the motive for the fight.
Metro police are also looking for whoever is responsible for stealing police equipment. The equipment was stolen from the home of a long-time sergeant of the Indianapolis Police Department. Police say the thieves managed to steal two handguns, two shotguns, a badge and bulletproof vest. You are encouraged to call 317-262-TIPS if you have any info about this theft, so these weapons can come off of Indy’s streets.
A man is now under arrest after he led police on a chase and crashed his car into a building on Sunday early evening. The car, a Buick, ended up crashing into the side of a laundromat. At least one other car was damaged during the chase. Police have not released the suspect’s name or why they were chasing him.
In Las Vegas, police there say an officer is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries after being shot Sunday afternoon. The “ambush style” shooting happened shortly after noon there, when the suspect approached a squad car and opened fire on two officers inside. The injured officer is being treated at the hospital and the suspect involved has been taken into custody after the second officer chased him down.

A grizzly discovery has left police there searching for answers today after the body parts of a child were discovered in a body of water at a westside park this weekend. A toddler’s foot was found at a lagoon in Garfield Park on Saturday. Also, a subsequent search turned up other badly decomposed body parts, including a head. Investigators and dive teams were back at the lagoon Sunday to search for additional clues in this developing case. The investigation will continue on this Labor Day.
President Obama will sign an executive order later on this Labor Day 2015 requiring federal contractors to offer employees seven days of paid sick leave each year. Obama will make the announcement during a trip to Boston. The time off can be used for personal sickness, care of a family member or domestic partner, or leave for recovery from domestic violence.
As Americans celebrate Labor Day today, the U.S. workforce is just about as diverse as ever. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics finds that as of May of last year, retail salespeople made up the largest group of American workers with over four-point-five-million people in that industry. Cashiers, food service industry workers and registered nurses are also popular fields.
The Kentucky county clerk still in jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples is appealing the contempt ruling that put her there. Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis has cited her religious beliefs for refusing to issue the licenses. Her lawyers are working through Labor Day to secure her freedom.
One of the Army’s most storied traditions has left 30 cadets injured. West Point’s annual pillow fight has given 24 members of the class of 2019 concussions. Academy Superintendent Lieutenant General Robert Caslen Junior released a statement Saturday saying the pillow fight held on August 20 got a bit rough. So rough, that many of the cadets required medical attention. Other injuries included broken noses, dislocated shoulders and a hairline fracture of the cheekbone. All of the students have returned to duty. The “New York Times” reports some of the plebes were swinging pillow cases with hard objects inside.
Back here in Indiana, here’s a bit of good news for frequent road travelers and holiday travelers alike. The Indiana Department of Transportation has reopened the northbound lanes of I-65 between Lebanon and Lafayette. Though it’s still an active construction zone, due to an on-going road widening project, the company who landed the contract for the bridge project over the Wildcat Creek has completed and tested the stability repairs over the bridge. They are ending the often-times problematic detour.
Lower gas prices have given many people more of a reason to hit the road this holiday. AAA Motor Club says Labor Day gas prices are expected to be at their lowest point in over a decade. With an average of $2.47 per gallon at the pump, gas prices haven’t been this low for a Labor Day weekend since back in 2004, and the motor club predicts over 35 million people are expected to journey at least 50 miles.
In Sports…
Recently cleared of all charges in a sexual assault case, a former Colts player now finds himself on the team’s practice squad. Former-no-more! The Indianapolis Colts are giving linebacker Josh McNary an opportunity to revive his football career after playing for the team for the past couple of years. McNary’s contract with the Colts expired while he was awaiting his rape trial. He now joins nine other players on that practice squad.
Finally…
What an exciting day for Indianapolis Zoo-goers on Sunday. They experienced a lot of extras after waiting in long lines to get in–everything from a cheetah named Pounce who pounced out of his enclosure on a very short adventure -to- an unaccompanied package discovery which put the wild facility on alert for a second time on a busy day. Both situations were resolved, with red alerts lifted. The cheetah was tranquilized and captured and the package turned out to be a family’s cooler on the parking lot. Zoo officials say the resourceful cheetah was never out roaming around. In fact, they say they located him in the back laying down sleeping in a landscaped area near his exhibit. He was most likely sunning himself like cats –even big ones– like to do. The cheetah exhibit is closed today to investigate how Pounce managed to get out a “red alert nap.”
