The Afternoons with Amos PODCAST For Wednesday, October 14, 2015. (Interview With Folks From Indiana’s Department Of Workforce Development WorkOne Starts At 2:43 Mark On PODCAST Media Player).  You used to call it the State Employment Service.  Or the Employment Office.  You used to call it the Unemployment Office.  But now its simple called Work One.  It’s the brand name for the services provided to Hoosiers to the community by Indiana’s Department of Workforce Development.  Even in the midst of the Great Recession and with the drop in unemployment and the increase in the number of Hoosiers working, there’ve been lots of changes in how the state provided employment services to those out of work or looking for work.

WorkIN/WorkOne Indiana

In an extended Afternoons with Amos interview, folks from the Department of Workforce Development, or WorkOne, stopped by to explain some of their programs and services.  Joe Frank and Marie McIntosh from WorkOne appeared on the program to talk about their agency and services works. Basically, when someone applies now for unemployment they do so electronically.,  But then, as part of receiving the benefits, they’re paid with a WorkOne counselor who works with the individual to assess their education, their previous work history, their knowledge and skills all to help them find employment.  And also to find out if one of the many classes offered free by WorkOne can help provided new training and skills to help the individual obtain employment.  WorkOne offers everything from preparing a resume, learning job interviewing skills, how to fill out those on line applications better and much more.

Jobs For America’s Graduates/WorkOne Indiana

A program WorkOne is proud of is called Jobs for America’s Graduates. A program that works with high school students on the verge of dropping out.  Th JAG helps those students gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed.  Work One services are done at two main locations. On the eastside at 21st and Shadeland at the old Western Electric facility.  And on the westside near Lafayette Square.  WorkOne also works through area community and multi-service centers to provide service.

Hoosier Initiative for Re-Entry/ WorkOne Indiana

Frank and McIntosh also talked about their Hoosier Initiative for Re-Entry, a program for ex-offenders to help get them the skills and training they need to succeed.  Veterans are given top priority with WorkOne programs and services.  Also with counselors who are former veterans who are trained to understand veterans employment needs.  Frank and McIntosh also said WorkOne service are also available for those who are already employed and want to get new training upgrade their training and skills.
