In the last few weeks, Nichelle Nichols, best known for her legendary role as communications officer Lieutenant Uhura on the original Star Trek TV series, has been celebrating a famous role, booking roles and living traveling the country.

Throughout the year and most recently at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, Nichols has been celebrating the 50th anniversary of the series’s existence. From attending conventions to signing autographs, the Robbins, IL native continues to make those long lines of fans happy they waited to speak with her and take photos.

When Blackfilm.com ran into the 83-year old while signing autographs, we asked her if she ever thought she would still be promoting the series 50 years later. “Absolutely and I’m very proud of it,” Nichols stated.

Last seen in a recurring role on the second season of the NBC drama Heroes, Nichols has stopped acting. Last week, she booked a role on CBS’ long running and number one soap opera, The Young and the Restless.

According to Mashable, Nichols will be playing Lucinda, a character with an emotional connection to a major character in Genoa City.
