These days, people throw around the word friend so loosely and trust those as confidantes who
aren’t really in their corner.
How can you know with certainty if someone is truly down for you and loves you for real? Bishop
T.D. Jakes is sharing his take on it.
“You don’t know who is with you until you get into trouble,” says the pastor of The Potter’s House of
Dallas. “When you are facing hell and things are not ideal, are the times you can identify who is
indeed in your corner.”
His sage wisdom came in the form of an Instagram post, expounding upon the sermon he preached
Sunday, Nov. 26, 2017, titled, “Remember What I Said.”
“There is something to be said about those that stick by you during the most turbulent seasons of
life with an unwavering unconditional love for you,” continues the author of Soar: Build Your Vision
from the Ground Up, which is a helpful guide for entrepreneurs, visionaries and leaders.
Here are 3 things Jakes says you should do to select and hold onto the genuine ones:
First, ask a question: “Who are these people in your life?” asks Jakes. This is the
identification phase. Think back on the worst times in your life and who stuck by you. Which
ones did you expect to be there that weren’t? Think about it.
Second, give time and attention to real connections. “Nurture those relationships for
their value is immeasurable,” advises Jakes, quoting 1 Thessalonians 5:11: “Therefore
encourage one another and build each other up.”
Third, count those relationships as blessings. “Relationships are some of the best
resources God has given you. He will use relationships to bless you,” explains Jakes. Don’t
take them for granted. He adds, “Don’t miss it because you have overlooked the value of the
people in your life!”
