A father, who has been identified as Anthony Burgess Jr., died while rescuing his 3-year-old daughter from a vehicle after it rolled into a pond on Indianapolis’ north side.

According to RTV6, the incident took place Sunday, after the father stopped to talk to someone and left his 3-year-old in the vehicle. The child hit the gear and shifted the car into reverse, rolling it into the pond.

The child’s father, who could not swim and another man, were able to pull the child out but the father submerged in the water for roughly ten minutes before being pulled out.

He was taken to the hospital where they were able to regained his pulse but he was unable to survive his injuries and died late Sunday night. He was reportedly 24 years old.

The child is reportedly in critical condition, while the bystander who helped was treated for hypothermia.
