Known for his business savvy and prolific involvement in the Indianapolis community, Bill Mays is still a name that Indy natives say and share proudly.
Mays, a native of Evansville, Indiana who graduated from Indiana University, founded Indianapolis-based Mays Chemical Co. in 1980 as a one-man operation and grew it into one of the 20 largest minority-owned companies in the United States.
In his lifetime, he would continue to make various investments, including the owner/publisher of The Indianapolis Recorder, radio and television stations. Plus, Mays served on a wide variety of for-profit and non-profit boards and organizations.
In December of 2014, Mays passed away but there is no doubt that his impact and legacy continues to live on.
