IMPD and IUPUI – “Proactive Policing of Social Harm”
We spoke to IMPD and IUPUI about their new partnership.
“Social Harm Spot Policing
In partnership with criminal justice researchers at the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IUPUI, IMPD is developing a new data model to guide focus areas for patrol officers in their beats. Many of the issues police are charged with addressing, from crime to traffic crashes to substance abuse and mental illness, have been found to be inter-related.
This next step in data-driven policing will use 7 years of historical data from multiple sources to identify places and behaviors that are indicators of social harm. Researchers will have generated 250 square foot areas where harm events are most likely occur and provided that information for beat officers, allowing IMPD to more accurately target enforcement, engagement, and social service efforts.”
In Studio Guests:
Major Kendale Adams – IMPD
Bryan Roach – IMPD Chief
Dr. Jeremy Carter – IUPUI, SPEA
