According to cnn.com President-elect Barack Obama asked Americans to honor the nation’s servicemen and women this holiday season.

In his weekly address, Obama also urged Americans to remember those who have been affected by the nation’s economic downturn.

He said, quote, “we must all do our part to serve one another; to seek new idea and new innovation; and to start a new chapter for our great country.”

Obama urged that this be a season of “common purpose and shared citizenship.”

He said that spirit will guide his administration when he takes office next month.

The President-elect said he is confident if the American people work toward a common cause, jobs can be regained and the nation can move in a new direction.

Obama said the U.S. celebrates the Christmas season with the knowledge “that hope endures, and that a new birth of peace is always possible.”
