Superintendent Dr. Eugene White plans to present a proposal to the board on Monday.

“Our concern is that as the governor’s come out and made the cuts that that might happen again depending on what happens with the tax situation in the state the revenue that the state brings in,” says Mary Louise Bewley the Director of IPS Community and Media Relations.

Teachers worry that balancing the budget means many of their jobs could be on the chopping block.

“I don’t want to see anybody lose their job in this type of economic situation but our children need teachers in the classrooms and the smaller the class size the more prepared our children are for the future,” claims Ann Wilkins, President of the Indianapolis Education Association.

The board has already voted to merge the two Key Learning Community Schools. That alone would save an estimated $1 million. However, 18 jobs could be lost in the merger.

When Dr. White presents his budgeting plan to the board next week it’s expected to include changes at IPS headquarters.

“Including, especially here at central office we’ll definitely be looking at the number of administrators we have and support staff here at the central office,” Bewley says.

A public forum will be held next month so the public can offer input on the budget.
