The Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets have always provided football fans with one of the top rivalries in pro football.  Lately, things have gotten even spicier.

It started with the Dolphins sweeping the big-talking Jets in 2009, and it spiked in January, when New York coach Rex Ryan riled up South Floridians at an MMA event, vowing to beat the Dolphins twice in 2010 and then giving a $50,000 one-fingered salute to fans who jeered him.

Later, the Jets lured linebacker Jason Taylor away from the Dolphins, who frankly didn’t seem to be all that interested in keeping him.  After leaving, Taylor has described the differences between the two franchises as “night and day.”

Now, Dolphins cornerback Sean Smith has supplied his two cents, targeting Jets receiver Braylon Edwards.  “We had a couple of good battles,” Smith said recently.  “I definitely won those battles.”

As Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News observes, Smith’s memory has some gaps.  Edwards caught nine passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns in two games against the Dolphins, including a one-handed, 19-yard score that came at Smith’s expense.

So maybe Smith should have just given Jets fans a middle finger instead.  Then again, by offering up such inaccurate boasts, he essentially has.
