It’s a topic that the African-American must hear and talk about. It’s domestic violence. Which is increasing in Indianapolis, especially in the African-American community. Various groups in the community, including the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority are coming together to increase community awareness of domestic violence and how to stop and get help for victims of domestic violence and their families. Afternoons with Amos devoted a full two hour program this this important topic and brought together many of the groups in the Indianapolis community that are working to shatter the silence about domestic violence and inform women, men and children about this growing issue. Domestic violence isn’t just violence by men against women. It can involve violence by women against men. And violence by adults against children.
It includes violence and bullying by partners in schools, including data and relationship domestic violence. Law enforcement is much more aware and in tune to helping victims of domestic violence. In Indianapolis new initiatives by IMPD and the prosecutors office is also helping. During the two hour special experts from law enforcement and the church and legal and social service agencies shared information and topics with listeners and Amos. Appearing were: Dr. Gisele M. Casanova, Assoc Professor at Purdue Univ/Calumet and Central Regional Director Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; Linda Major, Exec. Dir. Domestic Violence Affairs, Marion County Prosecutor’s Office; Lady Vivian Finnell Founder/CEO and Rev. Leroy Wadlington of Not to Believers Like Us, a Black church based group fighting domestic violence. Rev. Wadlington is also senior pastor Pilgrim Baptist Church. Also Kerry Blomquist, Legal Director, Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence; Julie Marsh, Exec Dir., Domestic Violence Network; Tracey Mitchell-Strong of Safe Families for Children and Dena Simpson, Assoc.
