16 Year Old Shot and Killed On Playground

A 16-year-old was fatally shot at a playground on the city’s northeast side yesterday afternoon.

The shooting happened near East 32nd Street and North Emerson Avenue just before 3 p.m. at the Hawthorne Place Apartments.

The victim was found the victim near the playground with apparent gunshot wounds.

The victim, later identified as James Johnson, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Johnson is a cousin of 16-year-old Monquize Edwards, who was killed in the July 4 shooting outside Circle Centre Mall.

2 Shot, 1 Killed In Early Morning Shooting

One man is dead and another man was injured in a shooting on the near-north side.

The shooting happened just after 1:30 at 16thStreet & Park Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found a 23-year-old shot in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors told police that the man who was killed was holding a baby girl at the time. The infant, was dropped, but was taken to Riley Hospital and was not injured.

Police Adding 165 Officers To Street Patrol

City officials plan to have 156 more police officers patrolling the streets by the end of 2014.

Over the next 18 months, 116 uniformed officers will be transitioned from desk duty to patrol functions, and 45 new civilian employees will be hired, freeing up at least 40 sworn officers to patrol.

The city has seen 70 shootings this year and recorded 16 homicides in June and with Black Expo I asked IMPD Chief Rick Hite what he had to say to teens coming to expo
