In a strongly worded letter, Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry says that public safety in Indianapolis has reached a crisis point and called for Mayor Greg Ballard to come to the table with other key city/county public safety officials to start and find short term and long term solutions. Appearing on Afternoons with Amos, Curry denied that he’s pushing for a tax increase to support increased numbers of police on city/county streets.  But insists that the time has come for there to be a “bipartisan conversation” between the Mayor, City-County Council, other elected officials and “non-elected leaders who work each day in the public safety system”.  Curry suggested that perhaps a group like the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee should be part of a broad discussion on how to solve, what is in Curry’s words, a public safety “crisis”. In the interview Curry told Amos and listeners that as many as half the officers in IMPD are eligible to retire this year.  Curry is concerned about the “aging” of the force and said less than 100 police officers are under the age of thirty.  Curry says officers complain that manpower is so short that officers are driving miles from run to run because of the lack of officers.  Click Link to Read Curry’s Letter to Mayor Ballard. Letter to Mayor Ballard from Prosecutor Curry  Click the Arrow to Hear Prosecutor Curry’s Interview with Amos.
