Event Encourages You to Stop Smoking

Today is the Great American Smokeout. Smoking is the number one cause of preventable death in the nation.  This annual campaign is helping smokers in Indianapolis give up tobacco and aims to help smokers take an important step toward a healthier life. The Smokeout encourages people to kick the habit by giving them a date to stop. American Cancer Society spokesman Robin Brown says the number of smokers in the country is dropping, but more than 43 million Americans still smoke cigarettes. Tobacco use is still the largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S. The American Cancer Society has a number of resources on their website to help smokers quit for good. The Great American Smokeout is observed on the third Thursday of November.

Indiana Rejects Obamacare Proposal Fix

Indiana is among seven states rejecting President Obama’s insurance fix proposal. It would allow health insurance companies to renew policies not in agreement with the Affordable Care Act for one more year. State Insurance Commissioner Stephen Robertson issued a scathing response saying, going along with the President’s plan, “would seriously destabilize Indiana’s insurance market and create logistical chaos.”

Man Arrested For Alleged Bomb Plot

A man allegedly planning to detonate homemade bombs in two Hendricks County movie theaters is facing felony charges. IMPD arrested 20-year-old Neal Grubbs on Tuesday at his home on Delray Road after receiving an anonymous tip. Police say they found a live tennis ball bomb in his bedroom.  Grubbs’ mom says he’s being set up by a former friend.

Arrest Warrant Issued For Murder Suspect

Columbus police are looking for a man they say is the prime suspect in a murder. Ryan Allen Klug is accused of stabbing his roommate and cutting her throat. Klug was originally called a “person of interest,” but an arrest warrant was issued on Wednesday.

Exhumation Ordered In Suicide Probe

Judge Stephen Heimann is allowing the exhumation of Carl Owsley. His ruling will permit an autopsy that will hopefully answer questions from family members regarding the manner his death was investigated. Owsley was shot in April, but his family is skeptical about authorities ruling his death a suicide.

Kids Hunting Squirrels Prompt Lockdown

Carmel police say the report of a suspicious man that prompted a school lockdown turned out to be two kids with a pellet gun. They told officers they were going to use it to hunt squirrels. Orchard Park Elementary was locked down Wednesday afternoon after a bus driver said she saw someone with a backpack that had a gun sticking out.

Indy Episode Of “Parks & Rec” Tonight

Indianapolis will be featured on the television sitcom “Parks and Recreation” tonight.  The story will center around the Colts and the NFL Play 60 campaign.  Mayor Greg Ballard will make an appearance, as well as Andrew Luck, Anthony Castonzo and Reggie Wayne.

Former Senator Lugar Honored At White House

Former Indiana Senator Richard Lugar is among 16 people receiving the nation’s highest civilian award.  President Obama presented the Medal of Freedom during a ceremony Wednesday.  Obama said, quote, “Dick Lugar’s decency, his commitment to bipartisan problem-solving, stand as a model of what public service ought to be.”

Obama Honors JFK Legacy At Medal Of Freedom Dinner

President Obama is honoring the legacy of John Kennedy.  At Wednesday night’s Medal of Freedom dinner in Washington, D.C.,  Obama said Kennedy stays with us “not because he left too soon, but because he embodied the character” of the American people. Earlier, the Obamas were joined by former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and members of the Kennedy family in a wreath laying ceremony at the Kennedy gravesite at Arlington National Cemetery.

Dungy, Harrison Hall Of Fame Semifinalists

Tony Dungy and Marvin Harrison are semifinalists for the Class of 2014 NFL Hall of Fame. Dungy spent seven years coaching the Colts, while Harrison played 13 seasons for Indianapolis. The finalists will be named in early January.

Pacers Get Past Knicks

Paul George poured in a game-high 35 points, including 13 of Indiana’s final 16 points, as the Pacers got past the Knicks in a 103-96 overtime victory at Madison Square Garden Wednesday night. George made three free throws with five seconds left in regulation to force OT. George Hill added 23 points and eight boards, while David West scored 10 points and grabbed as many rebounds for the Pacers, who bounced back from their first loss of the season in Chicago last Saturday and improved to a 10-and-1 record.  The Pacers play at Boston on Friday.
