The 2014 General Assembly adjourned on Thursday with passage of several of Governor Mike Pence’s priorities completed. Lawmakers approved a preschool pilot program, approved up to $400 million for state highway expansion, cut the corporate income tax and gave counties new options for business tax cuts.

Other legislative moves made on the final day of the session includes:

> A Mass Transit Bill: Lawmakers in both chambers of the General Assembly cleared Senate Bill 176, which is a plan to expand mass transit. Indianapolis Mayor Grey Ballard promoted the project for three years. The measure now awaits a signature by Pence.

> Veterans Receive Aid in a New Law: Indiana veterans have gotten help from special funding in the form of grants. These new grants will allow for housing, medical, child care, and other services. Pence said, “Helping our Hoosier veterans who served our nation and sacrificed their lives to protect our freedom is the right thing to do.” Pence signed this measure.

>Welfare Drug Test Bill Dies:  Welfare recipients will no longer face drug testing here in the state. The controversial “Welfare Drug Testing” bill died in the Senate with just hours left in the session. Senator Michael Young who authored the measure said his bill would help residents with addiction issues. Opponents claimed the plan would provide no help to poor people.

Pence thanked the state’s legislators for a job well done.
