Methodist Hospital

iu healthMethodist Hospital at 16th and Capital and University Hospital on the campus of IUPUI have been fixtures in Indianapolis’ downtown for many, many years.  The two hospitals came together in the Clarian Health merger in the 1997 and are part of the IU Health system.  But the changes that have roiled hospitals in Indianapolis and the country have impacted IU Health and Methodist and University.  As other hospital systems in Indianapolis – St. Vincent’s, Community, Eskenazi, St. Francis – have reduced costs and in some instances staff, that is now faced by Methodist and University.

The emergency rooms of the two hospitals are consolidating at Methodist on July 1.  And a committee of professionals at the two hospitals are working on ways of dealing with the new realities that hospitals and health care providers face today.  In the a wake of stories by the Indianapolis Business Journal and Indianapolis Star about the fate and future of the two physical hospital buildings, one of IU Health’s top officials appeared on Afternoons with Amos to give the community the straight scoop.

Jonathan Curtright

Jonathan Curtright is the Chief Operating Officer of Methodist & University Hospitals.  In a frank briefing with Amos, Curtright talked about the realities that hospitals all across the country are facing.  A world where more patients are seen in area and neighborhood clinics, rather than at a major hospital.  The number of days a patient actually stays in a hospital is fewer today, said Curtright; mainly to reduce costs to the patient, their insurer and the hospital.  Curtright assured Afternoons with Amos that the historic diversity of employes at the hospital would continue and that concern for staff and patients would be at the forefront as the facilities look at being “more efficient” to their service to Indianapolis residents, especially those living in the central neighborhoods of the city.  Click the Media Player to hear What’s Really Going on At Methodist And University Hospitals and IU Health.
