Dr. Spears emphasized that things are getting better.  The Heating and Air Conditioning system works.  Though Spears said the nearly 100 year age of the building and its historic nature makes it expensive to repair and renovation.  Spears said the Walker is committed to serving the community with a variety of programs in the coming twelve months.  The Walker is focusing on five “Core Elements” – Cultural Education; Youth Empowerment; Entrepreneurship; Art and Entertainment. Jazz on the Avenue continues on the Fourth Friday of the Month along with an Art on the Avenue monthly to encourage and showcase the works of local artists.  A movie is shown monthly, movies that focus on the struggle of human and equal rights in this country and the world.  Famed dancer Savion Glover comes to the Walker in October for a special performance.  And the Walker plans special activities on the Dr. Martin Luther King Holiday, including an appearance by Sarah Collins Rollins, a survivor of the 1963 Birmingham Church Bombing.
