Georgia Teen Files $12.5M Lawsuit Against Waycross Police

Georgia teenager Montre Merritt has filed a $12.5 million lawsuit against the city of Waycross alleging that he was wrongfully arrested and brutalized at the hands of Waycross police officer Cory Gay. According to Merritt, earlier this year after pulling into his family’s driveway he was approached by Gay. At some point in the encounter Merritt ended up facedown on the ground with a gun to his head. When his mother came outside to see what was happening, she was told her son was being arrested for a seatbelt violation. Read more.


Whites Show Support of Voter ID Laws after Seeing Images of Black Voters

A new study shows that white voters are likely to support restrictive voter ID laws after seeing images of African American voters. According to the report, which was released by the University of Delaware, 67 percent of white voters tested support voter ID laws when they were shown an image of white voters or no image at all. That percentage jumped to 73 percent when they saw photos of African Americans casting their votes. Read more.


CNN “Reconsidering” Support of Black Journalists’ Convention

After the National Association of Black Journalists expressed their concerns over a recent exodus of African American journalists at CNN — voluntary or otherwise — the news network released a statement that puts its sponsorship of the group’s 2015 gathering in doubt.  “Following NABJ’s recent comments about CNN, we informed them we were reconsidering our relationship, but we were clear that we had not made a final decision. It’s surprising to us that they would choose to make such a statement,” said CNN Spokeswoman Christal Jones. Read more.


Notable African American Filmmaker Ike Jones Dies

Notable African American filmmaker Ike Jones has passed away. Jones, who was the first African American graduate of UCLA’s film school, was best known for his production of “A Man Called Adam” which starred Ossie Davis and Cicely Tyson and “A Woman Called Moses” that featured Cicely Tyson as Harriett Tubman. Jones succumbed to a stroke and congestive heart failure October 11. Read more.
