pic-4-year-collegesHigh school students across Indiana are participating in “College Application Day” Tuesday.  This is an event designed to increase the number of first-generation and low-income students pursuing a college degree or other post-secondary credential.

Indiana’s Commissioner for Higher Education, Teresa Lubbers, said the day highlights to students the importance of taking that first step of applying to college–a necessary step because Lubbers suggested that the value of education beyond high school has never been greater.

Though today is the official day for the state, individual schools have flexibility on when to observe it. Schools can pick any day that their officials feel is the most appropriate for their schedules and designate it as “College Application Day.” The schools simply have to execute it with the primary purpose in mind of helping high school seniors navigate the complex college admissions process and ensure they apply to at least one post-secondary institution. The observation must occur during the school day, not as some sort of optional outside of the normal school hours activity. Teacher and administrators must focus on students who might not otherwise apply to college.

Here in Indiana, the effort is sponsored in partnership with Learn More Indiana and the national American College Application Campaign. It also has a partnership with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development’s JAG Program. Over 30 schools have already committed to participating in College Application Day, which is an increase over the ten high schools that observed the day with programming for their students last year.

College Application Day is a national initiative with all 50 states participating. Through the “College Go Week!” program, schools receive  technical assistance, training, webinars and evaluation support.
