Indiana Religious Freedom Law Crisis

The Indiana Legislature, with overwhelming Republican support has passed a “fix” to the controversial Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). In votes Thursday afternoon, the Indiana House voted 66-30. Nearly all House Republicans voted yes, while all House Democrats and three House Republicans voting no.  In the Senate the vote was 34-16. All ten Senate Democrats voted No along with six of the Senate’s most conservative Republicans. Democrats in the House and Senate voted no because they felt that the entire RFRA law needed to be repealed and the Legislature should begin working on full state civil rights protections for sexual origination and gender identity.  The RFRA Fix now goes to Governor Pence for either his approval, veto, or he can do nothing which would allow the measure to become law without his signature.
