The Afternoons with Amos PODCAST for Thursday, May 21, 2015.  (At The 26:04 Mark On The Media Player) A major discussion of have suicides increased among Black youth and why generated a lot of discussion and comment on the program. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) issued a detailed scientific analysis titled Suicide Trends Among Elementary School–Aged Children in the United States From 1993 to 2012. In the detailed report the eight researchers from the medical and public health fields examined data on youth suicides in the United States between 1993 to 1997 an again between 2008 to 2012. Among the conclusions reached:  “The stable overall suicide rate in school-aged children in the United States during 20 years of study obscured a significant increase in suicide incidence in black children and a significant decrease in suicide incidence among white children. Findings highlight a potential racial disparity that warrants attention. Further studies are needed to monitor these emerging trends and identify risk, protective, and precipitating factors relevant to suicide prevention efforts in children younger than 12 years.” Listeners expressed strong feelings about the report; while others told of their problems interacting with the mental health community for their children. It’s an engaging discussion that took up most of the Thursday’s program. The JAMA Study on Child Suicides is a Detailed Academic Study and Report.
