Former Moesha star and chart-topping singer Brandy Norwood, 36, was once hiding a dark secret behind her bright smile: she was depressed and losing faith in God.

But her Broadway debut as Roxie Hart in musical smash Chicago has rekindled a fire in her and given Norwood a new start—something for which she gives God praise.

“People would never guess the dark space that I was in about a year ago and how long I was sad and depressed,” she said in an interview with NewYork.com. “It showed in my physical frame and in my eyes.”

In April 2014, Norwood and ex fiancé Ryan Press mutually decided to call off their engagement, shocking fans and supporters who thought the couple was destined for lifelong happiness.

But Norwood fought her way back from brokenness to wholeness.

“Long story short: I cried out for help and the decision followed to be ‘the best version of myself’ I then did the ‘work’ spiritually, mentally and physically and saw my old life disappear,” she said. “Chicago presented itself to me and I then stepped into my dream. I’m wide-awake now. Thank you, God.”
