Lester Holt is making history with his promotion to permanent anchor for “NBC Nightly News.” The 56-year-old is the first African-American to serve as main anchor of a weekday evening newscast.

Andrew Lack, Chairman of NBC News and MSNBC made the announcement yesterday. Holt has been a television news reporter for 34 years. He joined the NBC team in 2000 and was promoted to full-time anchor of “Weekend Nightly News” in 2007.

Meanwhile, Brian Williams has been demoted. He will anchor breaking news and special reports at the cable network MSNBC. He starts in mid-August.
