KKK rally in Illinois

A week after the racially-fueled shooting at Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church that left nine dead, including South Carolina State Senator Clementa Pinckney, members of the Ku Klux Klan are reportedly gearing up for a large recruitment effort.

The White supremacy group is no stranger to distributing propaganda to push their agenda of a white-washed nation, but in the days after accused Charleston gunman Dylann Roof told authorities he shot the nine victims at the historic Black church because of their race, the KKK has stepped up its game. According to RawStory.com, residents in Mississippi, California, Florida, Alabama, Kansas, and Georgia received bags of candy laced with recruitment messages on their lawns and porches.

From RawStory:

In Fullerton, an Orange County, California city, some of the fliers were mispelled and read, “Save our land, join the Klan in Calfornia.” The bags filled with rocks and Tootsie Roll candy were thrown from a car over the weekend, the OC Weekly reports.

“It’s just wrong, there’s no words,” Fullerton resident Alia Cass told CBS Los Angeles. “That’s what it is — basically, there’s nothing right about it. Racism isn’t born — it’s taught.”

Similar bags were found in Rockdale County, Georgia over the weekend, and police there are are doing door-to-door canvassing in search of witnesses or surveillance video. “I want them to know that Rockdale County does not stand for this type of behavior,” Sheriff Eric Levett told the local NBC News station. He called the perpetrators “evil cowards” and said he will seek trespassing or littering charges against the flier distributors.

The local police stations aren’t taking the not-so-subtle messages lightly, especially in the wake of the deadly shooting, The Daily Beast points out. At least one message distributed in North Carolina explicitly aligns the newest KKK boost to Roof’s ideologies.

From the Daily Beast:

A message on the hate-spewing hotline, based in North Carolina, salutes 21-year-old Dylann Roof, who was charged with murder for the killing nine people in Charleston. Roof penned a racist manifesto before the June 17 mass shooting and wanted to start a “race war.” “We in the Loyal White Knights of the KKK would like to say hail victory to … Dylan S. Roof who decided to do what the Bible told him,” a man chirps in the recording. “An eye for an eye. A tooth for a tooth. They [black people] have spilled our blood too long. It’s about time someone spilled theirs.”

Local police stations have reached out to the FBI for assistance in finding out who is responsible for the hate messages. For now, many departments can’t do a thing.

“It’s criminal littering at the very least,” Bessemer, Ala. Police Chief Nathaniel Rutledge Jr. told the Daily Beast.
