Get in the Know with Kim’s Monday News & Headlines

Thanks for coming out and participating over the weekend in our Soul Food Festival. It was great seeing so many of you at Lafayette Square having a great time. In our top story…

It’s Mayhem in Midtown.

Two people have been injured in a shooting Monday morning in the 3100 block of north Pennsylvania Street. This happened around 6:45 a.m.  In this latest shooting, after a pretty bloody weekend here in Indy, one person was shot in the leg and the other was shot in the side. Both were taken to an area hospital for further treatment. No word yet on the victim’s identities, conditions or what may have led up to this incident.

Yes, it was a violent weekend in the city—the daughter of a prominent community activist in Chicago, Andrew Holmes, was killed here on Indy’s northwest side. This happened at a gas station on 38th Street at Lafayette Road, near Lafayette Square Mall, around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. It’s there, that Tamara Sword was caught in the crossfire and lost her life. She was a mother of five and a manager of a local KFC.  On Sunday, a man who is accused of shooting at Indianapolis metro police while they were answering a domestic disturbance call at 34th Street and Moeller Road was taken into police custody, and later that night around 11:30 p.m., two other people were critically injured in a shooting on South Lyons Avenue.  They’re in an Indy-area hospital where they are listed in stable condition.

In what looks like another high profile case of alleged child molestation, authorities have raided the northwest side home and gym facility of elite gymnastics coach Marvin Sharp, according to a report by WTHR. This happened last night. IMPD officers and State Police troopers made the raid through the Crimes Against Children unit. Several boxes of evidence were seized and after questioning, Sharp was taken into custody. Sharp is the owner of the well-known Sharp’s Gymnastics Academy where Olympic gymnasts have trained. Sharp, who has been USA Gymnastics Elite National Coach of the Year, has been booked on an initial charge of Child Molesting according to records.

A highly anticipated dining fest gets underway today in Indy. Devour Downtown Summerfest highlights 80 participating restaurants who will each offer special three-course, value-priced menus at their eateries over the next two weeks. Diners get a chance to sample some of what this city has to offer even including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free meals as well.

New Orleans’ financial health is still shaky, ten years after the costliest storm in U.S. history. A decade after Hurricane Katrina did more than a billion dollars in damage, the city faces some big challenges. Moody’s Investors Service in a report released Monday morning says pension, retiree healthcare, and service on debts increased more than 50 percent from 2009 to last year with fixed costs running 30 percent ahead of operating revenues.  Nearly 2,000 people died after Katrina swept in on August 29, 2005, spreading devastation and chaos.

A group of passengers that foiled a suspected terrorist attack on a French train now hold the nation’s top honor. French President Francois Hollande presented the Legion of Honor to three Americans and a Briton. They rushed and subdued a man armed with an AK-47 on Friday as he went from car-to-car shooting.

Opening statements are set to begin today in the trial of a white supremacist accused of killing three people during a shooting spree at two Jewish sites in Overland Park, Kansas.  Frazier Glenn Cross is accused of fatally shooting William Corporon and his grandson, Reat Underwood, outside the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City, and Terri LaManno outside the Village Shalom assisted living center in April 2014.

Vice President Joe Biden is declining an invitation to speak at this week’s Democratic National Committee meeting in Minneapolis. This comes as speculation continues to grow that Biden may throw his hat into the ring for the 2016 presidential race. The five declared Democratic presidential hopefuls are all expected to address the DNC meeting that starts Thursday.

In Sports…

IndyCar driver Justin Wilson is in a coma after a wreck at Pocono Raceway.  Officials say he suffered a severe head injury during Sunday’s race. He’s in critical condition.

A 14-year Indianapolis favorite and beloved former Colts player may be making a move to a dreaded rival of the Colts. Sports network ESPN cited league officials Sunday who said Reggie Wayne was taking a physical with Colts nemesis, The New England Patriots. The Colts and Wayne parted ways in March. Wayne was recently here in Indy during the Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration festivities where he was honored including receiving a key to the city from Mayor

And Finally…

Tracy Morgan is a newly married man. The comedian tied the knot with long-time fiancee Megan Wollover in a private ceremony at the couple’s home in Cresskill Sunday evening. Wollover tells “People.com” that she is grateful to finally be married to the love of her life after almost losing Morgan last year. The “30 Rock” star and “SNL” alum was critically injured after his limo van was struck by a Walmart tractor-trailer on the New Jersey Turnpike in June 2014. The crash took the life of his friend and fellow comedian James “Jimmy Mack” McNair. This is Morgan’s second marriage. He and Wollover have a two-year-old daughter together.

Today’s Indianapolis weather…

Mainly sunny. Monday’s High, 77 degrees.

Make today a great day… I’m Kim Wells.
