The highly anticipated Nina Simone biopic, titled NINA, is set to hit theaters in December. The film stars Zoe Saldana as the iconic singer-songwriter and civil rights activist.

RLJ Entertainment announced recently it had acquired the rights to the movie in North America. NINA’s release has been delayed for several years, plagued with casting changes, public controversy, and even a lawsuit.

Mary J. Blige was originally cast to star as Simone, but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. She was later replaced with Zoe Saldana who has faced public criticism for her Dominican and Puerto Rican heritage. The films director, Cynthia Mort, even filed a lawsuit against the production company in 2014.
