After a busy week with intense interviews about the passing of the late Bill Crawford and a Best of Afternoons with Amos on Friday, October 2nd, the program returned to normal issues with the main focus being an Open Line Day. Listeners brought up a wide range of issues including child custody and child support questions, concerns over whether the Major Taylor Velodrome on the near westside had been renamed. Amos also shared some of the findings of a proposed new Strategic Plan for Indy’s Parks Department. The surprise was how little persons surveyed and consulted about the Parks’ Strategic Plan valued programs for Indy’s youth and teens.

Afternoons with Amos also revealed the news that Governor Mike Pence has appointed an African-American to be the state’s Chief Information Office, in charge of the State’s IT system and efforts. Gov. Pence named Dewand Neely, Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Director of the Indiana Office of Technology (IOT), effective Friday, October 9th. Neely currently serves as Deputy CIO overseeing the IOT Seat Services program, a position he has held since 2013. Said the Governor, “I’m grateful today to name current Deputy Chief Information Officer Dewand Neely as Director of the Indiana Office of Technology. Neely was one of the initial employees for the Indiana Office of Technology and his extensive experience with the agency will prove critical as we continue to work toward innovation and efficiency within state government. I know that going forward, Neely will continue to serve Hoosiers with dedication and commitment.” Neely will be in charge of managing an annual operating budget of $27 million and overseeing a staff of 90 employees responsible for providing IT support for all state agencies. Dewand joined state government in 2003, first as a contractor and then a full-time employee for the Family and Social Services Administration. He was then became one of the initial employees to join the Indiana Office of Technology when it was created in 2005 to help assist with the statewide IT consolidation efforts. He has served several managerial roles within the IOT before ultimately reporting directly to the CIO. Neely received his undergraduate degree from Purdue University’s School of Technology and his MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University. Also on the October 5th Afternoons with Amos, Linda Kirby of Leadership Indianapolis talked about the 13th annual Get On Board event where some 90 non-profit Indianapolis area organizations recruited potential board members. Finding racial diversity in board members is very important for non-profit organizations and Get On Board helps with that.
