A new memorial in honor of Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be built above a commemorative carving of Confederate leaders Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and Jefferson Davis in Georgia. The memorial, which will live in Stone Mountain, will feature the words, “Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia;” a line from MLK’s famed “I Have a Dream” speech. It will also include a Liberty Bell replica. Following the racially motivated massacre that took place at a Black church in Charleston, many people wanted the Confederate monument to be removed. Bill Stephens, the chief executive officer of the Stone Mountain Memorial Association, says the monument is historic and will remain there. “We’re into additions and not subtractions,” said Stephens. The Dr. King memorial is slated to be completed by next summer. Read more.

McCray wanted the objects in the house to capture the essence of the global trade era. Earlier this week, 49 new pieces of artwork were installed at the mansion, giving birth to the “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York” exhibit. The artwork features imagery of freed slaves, documents, and goods that were bartered with American Indians. “I can’t imagine anyone going through this life and looking up at the walls and handling objects with no reflection at all of who you are as a person and your contributions to what made that world,” McCray said. “I think it would be kind of strange.” Read more.
