Monday’s Local and National News & Sports Headlines With Kim Wells

The rain will make it a slick drive to work, but the winds which could gust as high as 40 miles per hour could make the drive dangerous.  Forecasters are warning drivers about a windy and wet start to the day.  Things will dry out and calm down by tomorrow.

Indianapolis Metro Police Department Chief Rick Hite is defending a police shooting that left one man dead.  Christopher Goodlow was shot Saturday morning after someone called police saying he had a knife and was acting suicidal. Hite says the officers tried twice to grab Goodlow and pull him to the ground and also tased him before using their guns.  Hite says, “We have to be clear. The officers did everything they possibly could to avoid this.” Family members say Goodlow was bipolar and schizophrenic and that police should’ve known by his appearance and behavior that mental issues were involved.

IMPD is also identifying a man killed in a shooting incident on the city’s northwest side Sunday night.  IMPD says he’s David Bowman, 31, of Speedway. This crime happened in the 2400 block of Lafayette Road. Police got a call and found Bowman who’d been shot to death.  Right now, police want to talk to a woman who left the area in a gold Chevy Impala with dark-tinted windows and a spoiler in connection with this investigation. That vehicle was last seen traveling north on Kessler Boulevard North Drive.

Two people are dead following a crash on the city’s northeast side.  This accident happened early Sunday morning on the ramp from I-465 to Shadeland Avenue.  Police say a third person was taken to the hospital in critical condition.  Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused Reanna McCormick to drive up an embankment on the collector ramp, where she landed on a car driven by Steven Mann on Shadeland Avenue.

Indiana schools, nor parents have seen the results of last spring’s ISTEP tests and we’re being told, what the testers have, may be wrong. The Indianapolis Star is reporting on a computer glitch that may mark correct answers as wrong. Testers know about this glitch, but the paper says they left the scores “as is.” Indiana has seen a host of problems related to the new test.

Baltimore is bracing for possible unrest in the city. Closing arguments are set to begin today in the trial of the first of six police officers charged in the death of an African-American man in custody. Officer William Porter faces multiple charges in the death of Freddie Gray.

President Obama will visit the Pentagon today to host a national security meeting on combating ISIS. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the President will make a statement on counter terrorism after the meeting. On Thursday, Obama will travel to the National Counterterrorism Center for a briefing on homeland security threats.

Sports:

Coach Chuck Pagano and the Colts are being criticized for their blowout loss to Jacksonville.  The Colts were fine in the first half then fell apart losing Sunday’s game 51-to-16 on the road. Pagano says the loss will “sting for a long time.” He added, “There’s going to be a lot written and a lot said.  All you can do is go back to work and keep fighting, and that’s what we’ll do.”

Despite the Colts head-shaking stomping on Sunday to the Jaguars…

Here’s some good news out of the Colts camp. Punter Pat McAfee played a bit of Santa Claus for some Indianapolis families last week. The punter told Indianapolis Power & Light he wanted to pay some people’s power bills. McAfee covered an hour of payments, from 4 p.m. til 5 p.m. on Friday. Customers were simply told they owed nothing.  It cost McAfee about $18,000.  He says he just wanted to make the world a better place. So if you got your bill paid …thank that man. Now as far as the team’s on-the-field play, Sunday’s loss snapped a 16-game winning streak for the Colts against AFC South opponents, the longest division streak in NFL history.

Indianapolis Weather:

Windy. A steady rain all day. High 59 degrees.
