For the last 30 years, American Girl Dolls have become very popular, but there has been a lack of diversity within the brand. American Girl announced yesterday that they will be releasing their third African-American doll, Melody.
Each American Girl Doll has a background story representing an important era in US history. Melody is a 9-year-old from Detroit who is growing up in the 1960’s civil rights era. Melody “loves to sing and uses her voice to make a difference.” She also has her own recording studio that plays Motown music.
Melody was created by a panel of six educators and historians. The late civil rights activist Julian Bond even had a hand in making Melody. The doll will officially be released this summer and will cost $115. You can learn more about Melody in the video below, and read more here.
