Tony Burton, best known for his role as Tony “Duke” Evers in the Rocky franchise, passed away yesterday at the age of 78.

Loretta Kelley, Burton’s sister, told MLive that Burton had frequent hospital visits over the past year due to an undiagnosed medical condition.  She also said Burton didn’t get a chance to see the latest Rocky film, Creed, due to his poor health.

Burton was a native of Flint, MI where he was a Michigan Golden Gloves Heavyweight Boxing Champion in 1955 and 1957.  Burton has a total of 24 movie credits to his name, including the first six Rocky films.  He was inducted into the Greater Flint Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.

We send our thoughts and prayers to Burton’s loved ones.  You can read more on Burton here.
