First, in local headlines, today is the deadline day for voter’s registration if you plan to vote in Indiana’s May Primary—one where this state is important to the outcome of the delegate races for the U.S. presidency for both the GOP and the Democrats. Register two ways: Do so online at indianavoters.com by midnight tonight or, visit the clerk’s office at the City-County Building in downtown Indy by the end of today’s business day at 4:30 p.m.

Also, in 1968 Senator Robert Kennedy was on his presidential campaign stop here in Indy when news broke of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior. Kennedy gave a historic speech to the crowd that had gathered at the park that is now King Park at 17th and Broadway Street—one of peace, understanding and of a calling to rise to the greater humanity. The community will gather again tonight at 5 p.m. in King Park to remember Dr. King and his work on this 48th anniversary of his assassination and to remember Kennedy’s impact on Indy in the heat of the tragedy that was a challenging and pivotal moment in U.S. history.
Power crews hope to turn the lights back on for a few thousand people still without power after high winds blew through Indy over the weekend. Indianapolis Power & Light says 3,200 people went to bed last night without electricity. At the height of the storm 31,000 people were in the dark.
Rescue crews and witnesses are calling it a miracle. They say there’s no other way to describe how an Indianapolis man survived after a several-ton stone sign fell onto and crushed his car–with him pinned inside. Police say high winds whipped-up the sign outside a Chipotle restaurant in the shopping center at 86th Street and Westfield Boulevard causing the stone sign to topple over.
Metro Police say one man is dead and another heads to court from lock-up today, after a weekend robbery went bad. It happened at a McDonald’s on the city’s west side late Saturday night. IMPD officers say when they arrived, Cameron Gover, 30, was armed and robbing the restaurant. Those responding officers shot and killed him, when they say, he refused to cooperate. The second man, Briscoe Jones, 27 was arrested on the scene. He’ll make his first court appearance to day where he’ll answer to preliminary charges of robbery and felony murder for Gover’s death.
In National Headlines…
Ted Cruz and Bernie Sanders are leading the polls heading into the Wisconsin primaries. A new CBS poll has Cruz at 43-percent support among Republicans compared to Donald Trump’s 37-percent. Ohio Governor John Kasich is a distant third with 18-percent. On the Democratic side, Sanders is edging out front-runner Hillary Clinton 49-47.
Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump wants John Kasich to drop out of the race. Trump told reporters at a Milwaukee diner Sunday that the Ohio governor is, “taking my votes” by staying in the race with no mathematical chance of winning the nomination before the convention. Trump said the Republican National Committee shouldn’t allow Kasich to run. The GOP Convention in Cleveland this summer will likely be a brokered convention with lots of deal-making if none of the remaining candidates reach the delegate total of 1,237 to secure the nomination. Heading into the Wisconsin primary, Trump has 736, Cruz has 463 and Kasich has 143. Nine hundred forty-three delegates are still up for grabs.
Dozens of faith leaders are challenging the presidential candidates to make sure their political agendas include a “living wage” for low-income Americans. They are releasing what they call an “Interfaith Call for Moral Action on the Economy” today. They’re calling for a minimum wage of at least $15 an hour, improved benefits, and a guarantee of workers being allowed to organize without retaliation. The leaders of a number of faiths are issuing the statement on today’s anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior. Read their agenda HERE.
Amtrak is back to normal operations along the Northeast Corridor today, after a deadly accident outside Philadelphia. Two construction workers were killed and more than 30 people were injured and sent to area hospitals when a train collided with a backhoe on Sunday. None of the injuries are life-threatening. Also in an unrelated Amtrak accident a little closer to home, a person was killed when an Amtrak train collided with a vehicle just outside of Chicago.
In Sports…
The stage is now set for the Women’s NCAA Championship game here in Indy. The University of Connecticut’s women’s basketball team is a win away from yet another title. They will next take on Syracuse. Sunday night UConn routed Oregon State 80-51 for the Huskies 74th straight victory, the second-longest winning streak in NCAA and school history. Syracuse beat Washington 80-59 in the other national semifinal game. The Championship game for the women’s college basketball National Championship Game is Tuesday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse downtown. Game time is at 8:30 p.m. Eastern and will be shown on ESPN. And tonight…North Carolina looks to cut down the nets for a sixth time as it meets Villanova in the men’s college basketball National Championship Game tonight in Houston. The Tar Heels advanced during Saturday’s Final Four, knocking out Syracuse, 83-66. Villanova advanced to the championship game by destroying Oklahoma, 95-51. Game time for North Carolina versus Villanova is at 9:19 p.m. Eastern and will be shown on TBS.
Indianapolis Weather…
Today: Generally cloudy with a slight chance of a rain shower. A high of 58 degrees is expected during morning hours then temps will fall to near 45 degrees. An unseasonable cool snap is heading our way.
Tonight: Cover your tomatoes and flowers, forecasters say it’s going to freeze tonight. The National Weather Service is warning about this sudden cool down, and it’s issued a Freeze Watch from late tonight through early tomorrow morning. Some places could see temperatures as low as in the 20s.
