#PraiseIndyNews: Indy’s Meadows Neighborhood Breaks ‘Food Desert’ Status Today With New Stores

The Meadows area ends its struggle today of being a neighborhood in Indy that’s an active food desert. That’s an urban area known for being one in which it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food, meaning it lacks sufficient grocery stores. Several members of the community including Congressman Andre’ Carson and Mayor Joe Hogsett will join with officials of Save A Lot Food Stores and Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana to break ground for the construction of both of these store brands Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. in the 2800 block of East 39th Street–that’s right off of Meadows Drive. This new construction will continue the development of the Meadows neighborhood on Indy’s northeast side by injecting a $9 million investment including jobs into an area that will be known as the Shops at Avondale.
