The man who shot, killed and was acquitted of killing Florida teenager Trayvon Martin, is auctioning off the gun he used. George Zimmerman is now selling the weapon on Gunbroker.com, calling it a “piece of American History.” The former self-appointed neighborhood watchman was at the center of a firestorm of controversy when he stalked Martin in 2012 and used the gun to kill the unarmed 17-year-old during a fight he initiated with the teen in his subdivision. Zimmerman told Florida television station WOFL he’s received plenty of death threats since his 2013 acquittal and even more since announcing his decision to auction off the weapon.
Zimmerman said he plans to use the money from the sale of the gun to fight against what he calls the Black Lives Matter movement’s “violence against Law Enforcement officers” and “Hillary Clinton’s anti-firearm rhetoric.”
The bidding for this infamous weapon starts today at $5,000.
Response from Martin’s family
An attorney for Martin’s family issued a statement to the television station saying there’d be no comment from the Trayvon Martin Foundation on the matter. Instead, the statement says the foundation will remain “laser focused” on its mission to end senseless gun violence. To that end the foundation is hosting its Circle of Mothers Restoration Weekend event May 20-22 in Ft. Lauderdale to uplift, heal and promote community building among mothers who’ve lost children or other family members to senseless gun violence. The Circle of Mothers was created by Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, as a way to empower women.
