It’s been years since the Casey Anthony story made headlines, but the saga surrounding the case continues. A private investigator is now claiming that Jose Baez, Anthony’s lawyer, admitted she killed her 2-year-old daughter. “Baez had told me that Casey murdered Caylee and dumped the body somewhere,” stated Dominic Casey, in an affidavit that was filed in court and circulated around the web on Wednesday. The 15-page document also claimed that Anthony had sexual relations with Baez in exchange for legal services. Baez is denying all of the claims. “I unequivocally and categorically deny exchanging sex for my legal services with Ms. Anthony. I further unequivocally and categorically deny having any sexual relationship with Ms. Anthony whatsoever. I have always conducted my practice consistent with the high ethical standards required of members of the Florida Bar. My representation of Ms. Anthony was no exception,” he said in a statement. “Legal action is forthcoming.” Read more.

Ohio Judge Rules Against Voting Law

On Tuesday, a federal judge ruled against an Ohio voting law that prevented voters from participating in in-person early voting on weekday evenings and Sundays. U.S. District Judge Michael Watson claimed that the law, which disproportionately affected African-Americans, violated the Voting Rights Act. The law was introduced by state Republicans two years ago. Aside from enacting the law, they eliminated Golden Week, a seven-day period that gave residents the opportunity to register to vote and cast their absentee ballot. “Based on this evidence, it is reasonable to conclude that the reduction in overall time to vote will burden the right to vote of African-Americans, who use (early in-person) voting significantly more than other voters,” wrote Judge Watson. State Democrats commended his decision. Read more.

Affluent Blacks Open their Wallets to Fund New Smithsonian African-American Museum

The Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture has enlisted the help of affluent Black individuals and organizations to help them reach their fundraising goal. Many notable African-Americans are opening their wallets to fund the cultural institution. Oprah Winfrey, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, and Samuel L. Jackson have donated $245 million combined. Shonda Rhimes also contributed $10 million. Black organizations, including sororities and fraternities, made up 28 percent of the donations. Donations that were $1 million or more came from 74 percent of African-Americans. The Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia, hit a milestone when they donated $1 million; it was the biggest donation ever by a religious institution. “This is a staggering amount of generosity,” said Emmett Carson, Silicon Valley Community Foundation president and CEO, in a statement. “It’s a symbol that Black . . . philanthropy is not an oxymoron.” Read more.
