Finding Dory

Source: Disney/Pixar

If you hit the theaters this weekend with the family, chances are you probably saw Disney Pixar’s Finding Dory.  The film shattered records this weekend, raking in $138.2 million, making it the highest grossing opening weekend of all time for an animated film.

Audiences fell in love with the Dory, the forgetful fish, in Finding Nemo.  It is thought that the thirteen year gap between the two movies helped the sequel draw in such large opening weekend numbers.

Dory is voiced by Ellen DeGeneres, and it’s calculated that since the leading role was female, that 62% of the audience were made up of females.

Finding Dory also holds the spot for the highest grossing PG-rated opening.  DreamWorks’ Shrek the Third previously held the record for highest grossing opening weekend back in 2007 with a total of $121.6 million.  Read more on the story here.
