After a sixth child has been tragically crushed to death due to a popular style of dresser toppling down on them, Ikea recalls over 29 million dressers and chests.
Elliot Kaye, Chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, told ABC News, “Enough is enough.” He continued, “These are inherently very dangerous and unstable products if children are around them.” The CPSC reports that a total of 36 children have been injured by that particular style of dresser, with reports dating back to 1989. Four of the deaths were results of the dressers not being anchored to a wall.
Ikea is offering full refunds of MALM and other styles of dressers, if you purchased them between 2002 to 2016. If you bought one of the recalled styles before 2002, you are eligible for a partial store credit.
Ikea has posted information on it’s website about how to properly secure dressers and chests to wall. If you would like to request Ikea send you a free wall-anchoring kit, call 888-966-4532. Ikea is also offering to send a team to your home to anchor dressers and chests on walls to avoid any further injury. Read more on the story here and here.
