15-year-old Zaevion Dobson protected 2 girls from bullets, saving their lives, while sacrificing his own.  Last night at the ESPY Awards (July 13), Zaevion was awarded with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award posthumously.  His mother, Zenobia, and two brothers stood on stage to accept the honor.  Zenobia then delivered a powerful message on ending gun violence.

Zaevion lost his life on December 17 this past year, when he used his body to shield two friends from a gunman.  The shooting was gang-related, and not intended for the teenagers.  Zanobia wanted to use the platform to speak to the world.  She stated, “I’d love to stand up here and tell you even more about Zaevion than you already know — all the hopes and dreams he had for the future, all the things I dreamed about for him.”  Zenobia continued, “But I feel the need to tell you something else.”

Zenobia also spoke about the tragic shooting of Zaevion’s 12-year-old cousin, Jajuan, who also lost his life to a gang related shooting.  Check out part of Zenobia’s speech below, and read more on the story here.
