Locally…

Happy Monday, on this day to be extra aware in both, the morning and afternoon drive-time rushes. More school buses will be out today because Indianapolis Public Schools and several other school districts like Warren Township and Noblesville head back to class. For IPS, alone, more than 30,000 students are starting their school year and the Indianapolis Metro Police Department says drivers need to be aware that school zone signs will be activated. The speed limit in a school zone is 25-miles-per-hour.

The Urban Initiative greeted the students of Elder W. Diggs School 42, Monday morning for the first High-Five Rally of this school year. They met at 8:15 a.m. at the school located at 1002 West 25th Street. Men of the community, led by Dr. Preston Adams, offered encouragement and ‘high fives’ to the students as they entered the school building. Besides offering encouragement, the event also gives children of the community an opportunity to see a group of positive men who care about them and their success.

A person was found dead after an apparent shooting on the city’s northeast side early on this Monday morning. The person was found on the 3700 block of Chester Avenue around 6 a.m., according to various media reports. Two things are unknown at this time–when the shooting happened and the identity of the victim. Metro police have not released the victim’s name. This is a developing story.

An IMPD officer accused of shooting another officer is in jail in Cincinnati. Adrian Aurs was arrested early Saturday morning. Investigators say Aurs fled Indy on Friday night after shooting a detective called to his estranged wife’s home on a report of domestic violence. Aurs is being charged with attempted murder. One defense attorney has weighed in. John Tompkins told WTHR-TV that Aurs could be years away from trial. Tompkins said there are questions about finding an impartial jury and judge, and the need to make sure the investigation is above board.

Tragedy strikes on the far west side of the city where a baby died in a drowning incident. This happened late Sunday night in the 100 block of Burke Avenue. Metro police, according to various media reports, said the toddler was taken to Riley Hospital for Children and there was pronounced dead. Metro police are considering the child’s death accidental at this time but are continuing their investigation.

A new study has some shocking finding for some Hoosiers. The HIV outbreak here in Indiana last year was preventable. That’s the finding according to researchers who’ve now published their study’s findings in the New England Journal of Medicine. The Southeastern Indiana incident spread HIV to more than 180 people, mostly through sharing needles and it made international headlines. The study suggests that while health workers are supportive of needle exchange programs, state policy isn’t. The outbreak in Scott County was brought under control when an emergency needle exchange program was implemented by executive order. The report also found that more proactive measures are needed to prevent and curb future outbreaks. So far, there’s been no comment from the Indiana State Department of Health or Governor Mike Pence, who’s now the Republican vice presidential nominee.

Speaking of Pence, Donald Trump’s GOP vice presidential nominee is tying Army Captain Humayun Khan’s death in Iraq to what he called the disastrous decisions of President Barack Obama and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. In a statement issued Sunday night, Indiana’s governor said he and the GOP presidential nominee Trump believe that Khan is an American hero and wrote “his family, like all Gold Star families, should be cherished by every American.” Khan died in 2004. Trump continued his criticism of Khan’s family all weekend in interviews and on Twitter. Trump accused Kahn’s father, Khizr Kahn, of continuing to make vicious attacks against him and Kahn fired back, saying Trump’s ignorance amazes him. The Kahn’s spoke out against Trump publicly last week from the stage at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

Families of service members who died in uniform accused Trump of, “cheapening the sacrifice made by those we lost.”  The complaint comes after Trump has been in a war of words with the family of a Muslim soldier who was killed in Iraq in 2004, mentioned in the above story, the Kahn’s. The families who signed a letter described Trump’s comments as repugnant and offensive. Arizona Senator John McCain joins them in the sentiment. McCain accused Trump of disparaging a fallen soldier and his family. In a statement, McCain said Trump’s comments about Khizr Khan and his wife do not represent the views of the Republican Party. He called on Trump to set an example for the GOP and the nation.

Nope…a former presidential candidate says he can’t do it. Bernie Sanders made it plain on one Sunday morning news program when he told CBS’s “Face the Nation” he won’t be able to bring all his supporters to Hillary Clinton. He said on the show, most of the 13-million people who voted for him in the Democratic primaries would vote for Clinton, but undoubtedly, there will be those who won’t. As for his own actions, he told them he will actively campaign on Clinton’s behalf to defeat Republican nominee Donald Trump.
