The Indiana State Fair has come to an end. They set a final-day attendance record Sunday with more than 83,000 people who went to the fairgrounds on what’s become known, in our community, as ‘Gospel Day.’ Overall, possibly due to sweltering heat one minute and thunderstorms the next, attendance was down 19.4 percent from last year.
A man rescued from a burning car by Indianapolis Metro Police officers is in critical condition. Thirteen officers suffered smoke inhalation while saving him Friday night. A spokesman says the man was a suspect in a domestic disturbance and led officers on a high speed chase that was later called off because of safety concerns. He then crashed his car at 34th Street and Post, and had to be pulled out after it burst into flames.

Journalist, civil rights activist and publisher George E. Curry died Saturday night. You may know Curry from his syndicated columns that ran in hundreds of black-owned newspapers around the nation—like The Indianapolis Recorder. He served two stints as editor-in-chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), also as editor-in-chief of Emerge magazine in the 1990s, and recently he’d been raising money to relaunch Emerge as a digital magazine covering racial injustice, disparities and other issues important to the black community. A beloved and honored member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), the activist journalist worked as a reporter earlier in his career for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Sports Illustrated and the Chicago Tribune. In fact he was only the second black person hired to work at the sports magazine. In another first, he also became the first African American elected to become president of the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME). Curry was also known as a teacher and mentor to many people who work and serve in the field of journalism. He died unexpectedly at age 69. Minnesota investigators say it’s highly possible that legendary musician-singer Prince didn’t know he was taking a synthetic opioid that’s 100 times more powerful than morphine. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported that the drug fentanyl, which killed him, was in pills marked as the pain reliever hydrocodone. The newspaper reports a source close to the investigation saying the amount of fentanyl in Prince’s system was enough to kill anyone, regardless of size. Prince weighed 112 pounds when he died in April at his Paisley Park complex in a Minneapolis suburb. The ‘Star-Tribune’ says it’s likely Prince was a casualty of what’s being called a new national crisis of deadly counterfeit pills.
Donald Trump’s new campaign manager is claiming his support of forced deportation of illegal immigrants from the U.S. is still undecided. There have been reports that Trump and a Hispanic advisory council met on Saturday and talked about a, “humane and efficient” way to work with the immigrants.
Police in Bridgeport, Connecticut are looking for at least two suspects they say ambushed more than 100 people at a party early Sunday. Thirteen people ages 18 to 24 were hurt, including a man and woman who were shot in the face. Media reports describe them both as fighting for their lives. Police say the gunmen hid behind six-foot hedges when they fired into the crowd.

You can add a gold medal to both Paul George’s and Tamika Catchings’ trophy cases. The Indiana Pacers star won the gold with Team USA Sunday, beating Serbia 96-66. George played off the bench. Coaches say George’s Olympic performance should put to rest any questions about how his broken leg has healed. Indiana Fever star Tamika Catchings helped the U.S. women win 101-72 over Spain capturing their sixth consecutive gold medal on Saturday. This will also be Catchings last appearance in Olympic play. She retires from the Fever at season’s end. The Americans captured 121 medals in all, dominating international play. They earned 46 gold, 37 silver and 38 bronze. China came in a distant number two with 70 medals.

The 2016 Summer Olympics have now come to an end. The Closing Ceremony took place Sunday night at Rio’s Maracana Stadium with a celebration of song and dance. Gymnast Simone Biles was the flag bearer for the U.S. during the event which culminated more than two weeks of international competition between over 200 nations.

A flood advisory and flood waters still cover much of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and surrounding areas. More than a dozen people have died in the floods.
