Tennis icon Serena Williams premiered a spoken word piece backed by the songs of Beyoncé and Sia at her Monday night fashion show in New York. Williams said the poetry is meant to uplift and inspire young women. “I wanted to give almost an appreciation to what women do in life, and it was so important for me to do,” she said backstage to reporters. Williams appeared in Beyoncé’s ground-breaking musical narrative Lemonade in April. Politico Names DeRay Mckesson and Brittany Packnett Top Political Influencers
Politico Magazine released its yearly list of 50 political influencers changing the game in 2016 policy and politics on Monday. Black Lives Matter activists and Campaign Zero co-founders DeRay Mckesson and Brittany Packnett snagged the number three spot, right behind Donald Trump advisor Stephen Miller and Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions. Mckesson and Packnett have contributed to modern-day activism in monumental ways, enacting fundamental change and bringing prominence to the Black Lives Matter movement. High School Football Player Who Kneeled In Protest Won’t Face Suspension
Twitter lit up on Sunday when Doherty Memorial High School running back Michael Oppong wrote he would face disciplinary action for kneeling during the National Anthem at a Friday night football game. Since then, the Massachusetts school’s superintendent has reversed the decision to suspend Oppong. “He exercised his Constitutional Rights without disturbing the school assembly and he is not being disciplined in any way by his actions,” superintendent Maureen Binienda said in a written statement. Oppong is just one of many athletes joining Colin Kaepernick in his peaceful protest of the National Anthem in response to the country’s mistreatment of minorities. Read more.
South Memphis House Fire Claims Nine Lives In Deadliest Fire Since The 1920s
Nine people, including three adults and six children, were killed in a fire that swept through a South Memphis home, devastating the remaining family and local community. A total of ten people were pulled from the home by local firefighters. One child is currently clinging to life at a nearby hospital, according to authorities. Officials say it is the deadliest fire the region has seen since the 1920s. The fire broke out around 1:23 a.m. on Monday morning. The blaze began with a malfunctioning power cord to an air-conditioning unit. Read more.
