Responding to a ‘trumped’ up reaction…

A press conference was held Friday morning at the Steelworkers union hall in Indy with the AFL-CIO to discuss the Carrier Corporation jobs situation and the implications of President-elect Donald Trump lashing out publicly against the Steelworkers Local 1999 President, Chuck Jones. Jones went on record this week telling the media that Trump lied about the number of jobs that would be retained in the state and that Trump inflated the number with positions that were never slated to move to Mexico anyway. WTHR-TV reports the union, AFL-CIO is backing the Steelworkers’ president as he works to save more Hoosier’s jobs. Follow their story HERE.

Indiana received a distinctive honor in the area of schooling—one it shares with two other states. Indiana’s charter schools are tied for having the best systems in the nation, an honor bestowed by the National Association of Charter School Authorizers. The organization says Washington “is a national model for how to get charter school policies right.” Right up there with Washington state are Indiana and Nevada. The report takes a number of factors into account, including standards for authorizing new schools, evaluations, sanctions, and performance reports.

From November 30 through December 5, about four-in-ten people surveyed said they had a positive opinion of Pence. That’s compared to about six-in-ten who had favorable views of Joe Biden, Dick Cheney and Al Gore.

President Barack Obama says the late John Glenn “lifted the hopes of a nation.” The President released a statement soon after the world learned of the death of the space program pioneer, war veteran and senator Thursday at age 95. Obama said that Glenn spent his life breaking barriers and inspired generations of scientists, engineers and astronauts, the ones who will eventually take mankind to Mars. Glenn made history when he became the first American to orbit the Earth aboard NASA’s “Friendship 7” space capsule in 1962. Glenn will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. The dates and times for a public memorial at Ohio State University and a private burial have not yet been announced.

Macy’s will stop donations to Planned Parenthood. A new, experimental drug lowers production of a toxic protein blamed for the development of Alzheimer’s disease. The drugmaker Pfizer presented results of early stage testing at the annual Clinical Trials on Alzheimer’s Disease Conference in San Diego Thursday. Pfizer tested the drug on more than 80 healthy volunteers and they saw a decrease in the production of the toxic protein by as much as 59-percent. It’s the first drug of its kind to come out of early-stage research. Next step? Testing the new drug on people with Alzheimer’s.

And by the way…Trump will keep his side-piece job too. While pundits and experts weigh conflict of interest angles on the Trump empire and the effectiveness of placing that empire in a blind trust while his children run the day-to-day business, we’ve learned that Trump is likely to remain Executive Producer on NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice” show. Variety magazine reports the President-elect will remain as one of several executive producer’s of the franchise, which is owned by MGM.  It’s not sure what role Trump will have or if he’ll be paid. The show will return early next year with Arnold Schwarzenegger as the new host.

Reading is so critically important for the development of children…that’s common wisdom from parents and educators alike. So the Indianapolis Public Library, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and Indy Reads are encouraging you to spread the joy of reading by participating in a program that provides free books for Indy’s children during the holiday season. It’s called Jingle Books. Through December 23, you can “give a book and take a book” at Jingle Books displays at all Indy Public Library locations. You can take a book home as a gift for a young child in your life and/or donate children’s books, and more.  Join me on “Access Indy” this Sunday morning at 8. I’m going to talk with a multi-award winning and New York Times best-selling children’s author who wrote the books that the family films Because of Winn-Dixie and The Tale of Despereaux were based on. Kate DiCamillo will help you with some suggestions on getting books into the hands of kids in our community this holiday season.

..only on “Access Indy” with me, Kim Wells, on Sunday at 8 a.m. on our sister station 106.7 WTLC and TLCNaptown.com.
