@kwellscomm @PraiseIndy PraiseIndy.com #NaptownNewsie News   —

The state has extended the emergency status for a Northwest Indiana public housing project where many of its residents have been lead poisoned through the soil upon which they lived.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb signed an executive order on Friday afternoon to extend that disaster status for the East Chicago Superfund site for 30 more days. The original executive order was set to expire on Saturday, March 11.

You may recall, back on Feb. 9, the governor issued the original executive order declaring the disaster emergency for the area around and upon which the West Calumet Housing Complex sits. That area is made up of 322 acres in East Chicago that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identified as having lead contamination. Serious lead contamination.

Children’s exposure to lead is particularly damaging. Symptoms include developmental delays, abdominal pain, neurological changes, and irritability. Lead poisoning can be fatal.

The purpose of the 30-day extension by Governor Holcomb, according to his office, is to give the state more time to work with new agency leaders in the federal government and continue coordinating with local officials as they work to relocate the housing complex’s residents.
