If your electric bill has you doing a double take, you’re not alone. A recent report shows that Indiana households are paying 17.5% more for electricity compared to this time last year. As temperatures rise, so do our bills, and many Hoosiers are feeling the strain.

The Citizens Action Coalition says historic rate hikes are driving these increases. And while utility companies can’t raise rates without approval, the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission is struggling to balance affordability with the demands of modernizing our power grid.

Utility providers argue the hikes are necessary to invest in future energy needs, but for everyday people, especially in our Black communities who may already face economic hurdles this added pressure is making basic living more difficult.

But there is help available. If you or someone you know is struggling with high energy bills, check out these local resources:

  • Energy Assistance Program (EAP): Offers help with heating and electric costs. Visit eap.ihcda.in.gov to apply.
  • United Way of Central Indiana: Dial 2-1-1 to be connected with utility assistance and other community resources.
  • Local Township Trustee’s Office: Provides emergency financial assistance for residents in need—including help with utility bills.
