Toyota owners involved in a massive recall should begin hearing soon about the fix for potentially defective gas pedals.

Toyota said on Monday that its US dealers would begin repairing later this week 2.3 million vehicles recalled for accelerator pedals that could possibly stick, leading to accidents.

“There’s a spring in the gas pedal,” said Skip Walters, O’Brien Toyota.

The recall has nearly shut-down the world’s biggest automaker leading to the suspension of sales and production of the affected models. Now Toyota says it will send parts and trainers for technicians to dealerships this week to begin repairs.

“In the coming days, we’ll have a little better grasp on how quickly people can come in and hopefully our parts will be in and we should be ready to go,” said Walters.

The South Bend-area company that makes the pedals in question says it will make steel plates that will be used to fill the gap in the pedals to prevent the risk of sticking. Toyota’s US president said he’s confident that the issue isn’t electronic and that the so-called field remedy kits will fix the problem.

“I drive Toyotas. My family drives Toyotas. My neighbors and friends drive Toyotas. I would not have them in products that I knew were not safe,” said Jim Lentz, Toyota US president.

Some dealers say they’ll stay open 24 hours a day, seven days a week if needed to make the repairs. Toyota says it amounts to a 30-minute fix.

“We will be here if customers need us and if we need to have extended hours we will. It’ll be demand driven,” said Walters.

Known for its vehicles reliability, Toyota must now just fix over 2 million of its American vehicles, but begin to repair its tarnished image.
