Lecrae Questions Logic Behind Marriage Equality

Christian Rapper Lecrae took to Facebook to discuss the topic dominating the U.S. Supreme Court this week, gay marriage.

The Texas native questioned how the marriage “equality” argument could affect society.

“Religion aside. What are we basing equality on? The right to be with whoever you love? What if I love my sister? A 13 year old? An animal? Does the basis for equality still work? I’m Not spewing hate, I’m asking honestly about consistency? Again I’m leaving religion out of this,” Lecrae challenged.

The comment got over 6,600 “Likes.”

Many commenters thanked Lecrae for being brave enough to ask such a question. Facebook user Jen Tafoya praised the question saying “Exactly Lecrae, it’s only a matter of time!!!”

Yet many posted comments disagreeing with the rapper’s inquiry.

Laura Mincke Morris replied, “No because those would be innocent children, animals, whom can not make the decision for themselves. We’re talking about grown adults. It’s disheartening that my fellow Christians chose to inact their ‘righteousness’ when it comes to guns and gays but not against child abuse, animal abuse, any instance in which innocent creatures without a voice depend on us as a society to protect them. Shame on you.”

NeNe Nichell questioned, “Why are we comparing the ABUSE of young children and animals to the right to love an individual that can legally consent to that kind of relationship? Equality is based on the idea that as long as you aren’t hurting another creature, human or otherwise, you should be able to do what makes you happy. Equality is based on the idea that as long as BOTH PARTIES are able to legally consent to their own life choices and those choice don’t endanger themselves or anyone else they should have the same rights as EVERYONE ELSE.” (sic)

Many also joined the conversation to talk about how those opposing same-sex marriage are unfairly attacked and labeled as haters, bullies and bigots.

Tebriel Alexander wrote, “I’ve seen where this man is INSTANTLY ATTACKED AND JUDGED because he asked a question. Anytime anyone disagree with homosexuality they are immediately attacked. Who is standing up for that persons right of freedom of speech?” (sic)

Lecrae followed up with another question – “if I love 5 consenting adults or my mother are we fine with us being married?” – before recommending Sherif Girgis’ book What Is Marriage?: Man and Woman: A Defense

Lecrae is a Christian who uses influences ranging from his life growing up in Houston to John Piper’s book Don’t Waste Your Life to craft songs preaching the gospel to the younger generation. His most recent single “Fakin'” was been featured on secular channels MTV and MTV2. Additionally he is a GRAMMY and Dove Award winner.
