After receiving criticism for a lack of diversity, Apple has vowed to add more women and minorities to its board of directors.

According to reports, shareholders expressed concerns about the tech giant’s nearly all-White, all-male board several times in the past few months. The eight-member board currently consist of seven Caucasian men over the age of 50 and one Asian woman, former Avon CEO Andrea Jung.

To combat the issue, Apple recently added new language to its board committee charter.

“The Committee is committed to actively seeking out highly qualified women and individuals from minority groups to include in the pool from which Board nominees are chosen,” it reads.

The concerns were raised by shareholders Sustainability Group and Trillium Asset Management LLC.

“We live in an increasingly complex global marketplace, and the companies that can hire, attract and retain women and people of color are better equipped to capitalize on global opportunities and avoid missteps that may not be apparent to a more homogeneous group,” Larisa Ruoff of the Sustainability Group said.

Jonas Kron, from Trillium Asset Management LLC, added, “There is a general problem with diversity at the highest echelon of Apple…It’s all white men.”
