Some 70,000 people from all over the country are in Indianapolis for the 143rd Annual Meeting and Exhibits of the National Rifle Association (NRA). The convention is utilizing every square foot of the Indiana Convention Center downtown, plus concerts and activities in Lucas Oil Stadium. Afternoons with Amos humbly requested an opportunity to have a spokesperson for the NRA to appear on the program to talk briefing about the goals of the organization so the Indianapolis African-American community might have a better understanding of the organization and its goals and objectives. Our request, made in person to the press officials of the NRA, specifically to Media Liaison Catherine Mortsensen. Unfortunately, the top officials of the NRA ignored our request. And so Indianapolis’ African-American was denied the opportunity to hear the NRA’s side of the story and their ideas for how our Black community can reduce gun violence and the proliferation of illegal guns. Meanwhile other organizations opposed to the NRA’s continued intransigence towards finding common ground, reasonable compromise on issue of responsible gun regulation and limits of high powered automatic weapons and multiple bullet magazines gathered in Indianapolis to draw attention to the NRA’s unwillingness to compromise. While RNA spokespeople refused to talk with our Black community, Afternoons with Amos featured interviews with Lucia McBath, the mother of Jordan Taylor, the Florida teen killed by an armed white man irritated over the “loud music” Taylor and other youths were playing on their car radio. Ms. McBath was in Indianapolis with Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense in America and Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Also appearing was Josh Horwitz with the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.
