Rep. Andre Carson Speaks To Amos About Michael Brown Death, Situation In Ferguson, Militarization Of Police

Cong. Andre Carson Talks To IMPD Chief And Public Safety Director (thumbnail)Rep. Andre Carson talked live to Afternoons with Amos on the situation in Ferguson, Missouri and the controversial shooting and killing by police of 18 year old Michael Brown that has captivated and enraged African-Americans here and people worldwide.  Rep. Carson talked about the role that his Congressional Colleague Rep. William Lacy Clay, who represents Missouri’s 1st Congressional District, which includes much of St. Louis and suburbs, including Ferguson. Carson strongly condemned the violence and looting that has occurred the past few nights in Ferguson.  He praised the efforts of Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and efforts of the local community to reduce tensions. But Rep. Carson was critical of some of the decisions, or more importantly the lack of information provided by local officials in Ferguson and St. Louis County.  Rep. Carson also expressed concern about the use of military weapons bought by local law enforcement agencies as government surplus.  He questioned their real use in policing.  Rep. Carson said that true community policing could’ve helped reduce tensions in Ferguson.  And he also stressed the importance of the community being engaged in local elections, not just elections of President’s.  Saying if the Ferguson community had been engaged in their local elections, there would’ve been more representation from the community.
